What does it mean?
C1403 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Transfer Case Range Position Sensor Performance .
Symptoms
- Service four wheel drive message with a warning lamp
- Transfer case starts a shift but never completes it
- Selector indicator lamps flash while the system keeps trying
- Noise or a clunk from the transfer case during a shift attempt
- Vehicle stuck in one range with four wheel drive unavailable
Likely causes
- Worn contacts inside the transfer case range position sensor or encoder
- Shift motor binding or slow so the commanded position is never reached
- Water, mud or corrosion inside the encoder housing under the vehicle
- Corroded or damaged connector at the transfer case
- Harness damage along the underbody where the loom is exposed to stones and salt
- Internal transfer case problem such as a worn shift fork or a sticking range rail
- Low fluid or contaminated fluid in the transfer case making the shift sluggish
How to fix it
- Command a range change with the scan tool and watch the position sensor value as the motor runs
- Inspect the connector under the vehicle for water, mud and corrosion, and dry it out before further testing
- Check the motor supply and ground during a commanded shift with a voltage drop test
- Verify the transfer case fluid level and condition
- Check for mechanical binding by following the manufacturer procedure to move the range rail
- Replace the encoder or shift motor assembly if the position feedback is proven faulty
- Open the transfer case for internal inspection only when a fork or rail problem is indicated
