Avoid extended driving; visit a service soon.

First step

Test the actuator and the wire separately.

  • 4Chassis / ABS
  • 64Sequence number

What does it mean?

C1464 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: Front Axle Disconnect Control Circuit Low .

Symptoms

  • Four wheel drive service lamp or message
  • Front axle will not engage when 4WD is selected
  • Front axle stays connected, giving noise and drag at road speed
  • Higher fuel consumption and a humming noise from the front axle
  • Traction feels unchanged when the driver selects four wheel drive

Likely causes

  • Short to ground in the control wire running to the front axle disconnect actuator
  • Chafed or crushed harness along the front axle housing where road debris hits it
  • Water and corrosion inside the actuator connector, which sits low on the vehicle
  • Internally shorted actuator solenoid or motor
  • Poor ground point for the actuator circuit
  • Damaged control module output driver
  • Wiring incorrectly reconnected after axle, CV joint or suspension work

How to fix it

  1. Check freeze frame and confirm the circuit still reads low with the ignition on
  2. Inspect the actuator connector for water, mud and corrosion, and check the harness for chafe damage
  3. Measure the actuator resistance and compare with specification
  4. Unplug the actuator; if the fault changes to an open circuit, the actuator is internally shorted
  5. With the actuator unplugged, check the control wire for a short to ground
  6. Command engagement with a scan tool and listen or feel for actuator movement
  7. Repair the harness or replace the actuator, then verify engagement and disengagement on a road test
