Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Separate the electrical fault from a genuine pressure loss:

What does it mean?

On a direct injection engine with a separate high pressure rail for each cylinder bank, this code reports that the bank 2 rail pressure sensor signal has dropped below the lowest voltage the module treats as valid. The sensor is fed a 5-volt reference and produces an offset voltage even with the rail completely empty, so a signal close to zero cannot represent any real pressure and is rejected outright.

The module compares the value against a fixed low threshold, waits for the condition to persist through a calibrated period, then stores the code and stops using bank 2 pressure as feedback. Because the high pressure control loop relies on that feedback, the module normally limits rail pressure, reduces torque and may run the engine in a protective mode. It is important to establish whether the circuit is shorted or the rail has genuinely lost pressure, since the driving symptoms overlap heavily.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on with reduced power or limp mode
  • Long cranking, hard starting or a no-start condition
  • Severe misfire and rough running that feels concentrated on one side of the engine
  • Stalling shortly after start or when the throttle is closed
  • Very poor acceleration and a flat response to throttle input
  • Fuel smell or visible leakage if a mechanical failure is contributing

Likely causes

  • Signal wire shorted to ground, commonly where the loom is chafed against a bracket, the cylinder head or a fuel line
  • Loss of the 5-volt reference to the bank 2 sensor, which drives the output to zero and often sets companion codes
  • Melted or heat-damaged insulation where the harness runs near the exhaust manifold or turbocharger
  • Internally failed rail pressure sensor with a shorted output stage
  • Corrosion or fuel and oil contamination inside the sensor connector bridging the signal to ground
  • Genuine loss of bank 2 rail pressure caused by a failed high pressure pump or a large leak
  • Engine control module reference supply or input circuit failure, the least likely cause

How to fix it

  1. Read live rail pressure for both banks with the engine running or cranking; a bank 2 value at zero while bank 1 is normal points at the circuit
  2. Unplug the bank 2 sensor and watch the scan tool. A jump to full scale means the harness is intact and the sensor has shorted; a value that stays at zero means the signal wire is grounded
  3. With the sensor unplugged and the ignition on, measure the 5-volt reference and the ground at the harness connector, and scan for other codes that would show a shared reference fault
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to ground with the module disconnected, following the loom past heat sources, brackets and fuel lines
  5. Where the wiring is proven good, verify actual bank 2 rail pressure by the manufacturer approved method before replacing the sensor
  6. Repair the shorted conductor or connector, re-route and heat-protect the harness, then clear the code
  7. Replace the bank 2 rail pressure sensor once reference, ground and signal circuits all measure good, observing the depressurising procedure for a high pressure fuel system
