Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic Bank 2

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Catch the dropout rather than replacing parts:

  • PPowertrain
  • 0Generic code

  • C2Sequence number

What does it mean?

This code is stored when the bank 2 fuel rail pressure signal is present but unstable, dropping out or jumping between samples rather than failing in one direction. High pressure rail pressure does fluctuate with each pump stroke and each injection event, but it does so within a predictable envelope; a signal that momentarily disappears or steps far outside that envelope cannot be a real measurement.

The module logs the circuit as intermittent or erratic once these events occur often enough within a monitoring window. On a V engine the bank 2 sensor is frequently buried between the cylinder heads or under the intake, in a hot, vibrating and hard to reach position, which makes fretted terminals and heat-damaged insulation the leading causes. Since the module briefly acts on each bad sample, the driver often feels a momentary stumble before everything returns to normal.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) that appears and clears without any repair
  • Momentary stumble, hesitation or a brief misfire, often under load
  • Sudden short-lived power loss that recovers on its own
  • Rail pressure trace on a scan tool showing spikes or dropouts not seen on bank 1
  • Occasional long cranking or a stall that cannot be reproduced on demand
  • Symptoms that follow rough roads or a fully warmed engine

Likely causes

  • Loose or fretted terminals in the bank 2 rail pressure sensor connector
  • Heat-embrittled insulation cracking where the harness passes the exhaust or turbocharger
  • Chafed signal wire touching ground only under vibration or engine movement
  • Intermittent open in the sensor ground or a corroded engine ground point
  • Failing sensor with an internal cracked joint that opens once it is hot
  • Signal wire routed alongside injector or ignition wiring and picking up interference
  • Loose or partially seated connector at the engine control module

How to fix it

  1. Read the freeze frame to learn the load, speed and temperature present when the code set, then plan a test drive around them
  2. Graph bank 1 and bank 2 rail pressure together on a scan tool or scope; the healthy bank gives you a reference trace to compare against
  3. Wiggle test the bank 2 sensor connector and the harness section by section with the engine running while watching the trace
  4. Check terminal tension with a matching pin and inspect the contact faces for fretting corrosion and contamination
  5. Follow the harness looking for rub-through and heat damage at brackets, fuel lines, heat shields and anywhere it crosses a moving part
  6. Voltage drop test the signal and ground circuits with the engine hot and vibrating rather than at rest
  7. Repair the terminal, wire or ground and heat-protect the loom, then road test; replace the bank 2 rail pressure sensor only if the dropouts continue with a proven harness
