First step

Confirm that the sensor fitted matches the manufacturer's part specification for a direction sensing sensor

What does it mean?

A modern crankshaft position sensor does more than count teeth: it also reports which way the crankshaft is turning. The module needs that information because an engine coming to rest does not simply stop, it usually rocks backwards and forwards for a moment as cylinder compression pushes it the other way. On stop/start vehicles the module has to follow that rocking exactly, otherwise it will memorise the wrong resting position for the next restart. P034B is stored when the reported direction changes far more often than is physically plausible, for example several reversals within a few seconds, or when the direction information contradicts what the camshaft signal shows.

Symptoms

  • Stop/start function disabled or working only intermittently
  • Slow, rough or noisy automatic restarts
  • MIL on with the code stored, often together with other crankshaft sensor codes
  • Occasional extended cranking on a normal key start
  • Momentary stumble as the engine restarts from an automatic stop
  • No obvious change in performance once the engine is running normally

Likely causes

  • Crankshaft position sensor that has lost its direction detection capability or is producing a noisy output
  • Reluctor ring damage, run-out or contamination confusing the sensor
  • An incorrect sensor fitted, since a sensor without direction recognition cannot satisfy this diagnostic
  • Poor air gap, a loose sensor, or a sensor not fully seated after service work
  • Electrical interference from damaged shielding, a poor ground or a nearby high current cable
  • Corroded or wet sensor connector giving intermittent signal quality
  • Excessive crankshaft end float or a loose harmonic balancer allowing the trigger wheel to move

How to fix it

  1. Confirm that the sensor fitted matches the manufacturer's part specification for a direction sensing sensor
  2. Capture the sensor signal with an oscilloscope through a complete stop and restart event and study amplitude, noise and the reversal pattern
  3. Inspect the sensor tip for metal debris and the reluctor ring for damage, cracks and run-out
  4. Check the sensor mounting, seating and air gap, and correct anything disturbed by previous work
  5. Test the sensor supply, ground, signal and shield connections for continuity and voltage drop, and inspect the connector for moisture
  6. Check the battery and charging system, because low or unstable voltage upsets this diagnostic
  7. Renew the sensor or repair the trigger wheel as the tests dictate, then clear the code and verify over several stop/start cycles
