First step

Confirm the affected cylinder from the misfire counters and freeze frame data

  • PPowertrain
  • 0Generic code
  • 3Ignition / Misfire
  • 5CSequence number

What does it mean?

The fifth ignition control channel must be pulled low by the module in order to trigger its coil. P035C is set when the module commands the channel but keeps reading a high voltage, so the current it expects never flows. The likely causes are an open or resistive control path, or battery voltage reaching the line from another circuit. Since the other ignition channels normally continue to work, the fault is confined to this channel's own wire, its terminals or the coil input it feeds, and the cylinder it serves loses reliable spark.

Symptoms

  • Persistent misfire and a rough, shaking idle
  • MIL on and flashing when the engine is under load
  • Poor acceleration and hesitation
  • Hard starting, worse in cold or damp weather
  • Popping from the exhaust and a raw fuel smell
  • Higher fuel consumption

Likely causes

  • Open or high resistance in the E channel control wire
  • Corroded or loose terminal in the coil or module connector
  • Control line shorted to battery voltage through damaged insulation
  • Open igniter input in the coil on this channel
  • Poor ignition module ground preventing the line from being pulled down
  • Module output stage failure, evaluated last

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the affected cylinder from the misfire counters and freeze frame data
  2. Inspect and test the connector terminals for tension, corrosion and moisture
  3. Measure the control line voltage with the ignition on and while cranking to confirm it never falls
  4. Carry out continuity and voltage drop checks on the control wire
  5. Disconnect the module and test the line for battery voltage arriving from another circuit
  6. Check the coil supply and the quality of the ignition ground
  7. Repair the wiring or renew the coil, then clear the code and confirm with a road test
