What does it mean?
The preheat indicator control output has to be pulled down by the control module for the lamp to light. P037B is stored when the module commands the indicator on but still measures a high voltage on the line, so no current flows. Electrically this means an open circuit, a high resistance connection, or battery voltage fed onto the control line from another circuit. As with the low version of this fault, the glow plug system itself may be operating perfectly; what has failed is the driver's indication that preheating is under way, and that matters most on cold mornings when the driver needs to know when to crank.
Symptoms
- Preheat indicator never illuminates, even on a genuinely cold start
- MIL on with the code stored
- The driver cranks too soon because there is no wait signal, giving hard starting and white smoke
- Rough running and knocking noise in the first seconds after a cold start
- No change in behaviour once the engine is warm
- Other lamps in the same cluster circuit sometimes affected as well
Likely causes
- Open or broken indicator control wire between the module and the instrument cluster
- Blown or missing indicator bulb on clusters that still use one
- Corroded, loose or backed-out terminals in the cluster or module connector
- Control line shorted to battery voltage through damaged insulation
- Failed lamp driver stage inside the instrument cluster
- Engine control module output failure, evaluated only after the wiring checks
How to fix it
- Check the lamp function with the ignition on and note whether it fails to light at all or only sometimes
- Read every fault memory, including the instrument cluster, and check for glow plug circuit codes
- Test continuity from the module pin to the cluster pin and perform a voltage drop test on the wire
- Measure the voltage on the control line with the ignition on; battery voltage that does not drop when the lamp is commanded confirms the fault
- Inspect and re-tension the connector terminals at both ends and clean any corrosion
- Check for a short to power by measuring the line with both ends disconnected
- Repair the wiring, renew the bulb or the cluster circuit as required, then clear the code and confirm on a cold start
