What does it mean?
Some engines use a switchable camshaft profile, either a second cam lobe or a variable lift mechanism, that is engaged only while the engine is cold. Running a cold start specific valve profile raises exhaust gas temperature and improves mixture preparation, so the catalytic converter reaches operating temperature quickly and warm-up emissions stay low.
The control module commands the change and then confirms it by watching camshaft position, engine speed stability and the load or air flow response. P037C is stored when the cold start profile does not produce the expected result within the calibrated time: the mechanism does not switch, switches only partly, or switches at the wrong moment. This is a performance code, so the electrical circuit is usually intact and the cause is more often oil related or mechanical.
Symptoms
- Rough, unstable idle for the first minutes after a cold start
- Hesitation, stumble and weak throttle response while the engine warms up
- Louder valve train noise, ticking or rattle during warm-up
- MIL on with the code stored, typically after a cold start
- Higher fuel consumption on short journeys and a possible emissions test failure
- Everything feels normal once the engine has reached operating temperature
Likely causes
- Camshaft profile switching actuator or solenoid stuck by sludge, varnish or debris in the oil galleries
- Low engine oil level, degraded oil, or an oil viscosity outside the manufacturer's specification, so the mechanism cannot move
- Low oil pressure at cold start from a worn pump or a sticking pressure regulator
- Mechanically worn or jammed switchable tappet, rocker or lift mechanism
- Camshaft position sensor giving an inaccurate signal, so the module misjudges the switch
- Timing chain wear or a phaser out of position shifting the whole camshaft relationship
- Electrical faults at the solenoid: high resistance, damaged connector, chafed harness
How to fix it
- Check the engine oil level, condition and specification, and review the service history, since the wrong oil is a common cause with these mechanisms
- Read the freeze frame data to confirm the code set at low coolant temperature during warm-up
- Watch commanded versus actual camshaft position and the switching status in live data during a genuine cold start
- Measure the solenoid resistance and check its supply, ground and control wiring for voltage drop and chafe damage
- Test oil pressure at cold start against the manufacturer's figure and inspect the oil filter and galleries for debris
- Command the switching solenoid with the scan tool and listen and watch for a response, then inspect the mechanism itself if nothing moves
- Carry out an oil and filter change with the correct specification, repair or renew the failed component, clear the code and verify over several cold starts
