What does it mean?

P04B8 is the general circuit fault for the sensor or switch that tells the module whether the fuel filler door is open or closed. The module supplies a reference voltage or a pull up to the switch and reads the returning level; a closed door pulls the line one way and an open door lets it go the other. When the value read does not fall inside either valid window, or the module cannot establish a plausible signal at all, this code is stored. It is a broad code that can be set by an open circuit, a short, a failed switch or a connector problem, so the diagnosis has to narrow it down with measurements rather than assumptions. While the fault is active, refuelling control and the evaporative self tests that depend on knowing the door state are usually suspended.

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on with a fuel filler door related fault stored
  • Fuel filler door status in live data that does not change when the door is opened and closed
  • Refuelling functions unavailable or delayed on vehicles with a controlled filler door
  • Evaporative readiness monitors that will not complete
  • Warning message concerning the fuel filler door on equipped vehicles

Likely causes

  • Open or broken wire between the module and the fuel filler door switch
  • Corrosion or water inside the switch connector, a common problem in this exposed area
  • Failed switch with contacts that no longer change state
  • Terminal backed out of the connector or a damaged connector lock
  • Chafed wiring at the body grommet where the harness enters the filler recess
  • Poor ground for the switch circuit due to a corroded body ground point
  • Module input circuit failure, considered last after the external circuit tests good

How to fix it

  1. Watch the door status in live data while opening and closing the door to see whether the input responds at all
  2. Disconnect the switch and check the reference voltage and ground at the harness connector with the ignition on
  3. Measure the switch across its terminals with a meter while operating the plunger, confirming it actually changes state
  4. Test the signal wire for continuity from the module to the switch and for shorts to ground and to voltage
  5. Inspect the connector and the harness at the body grommet for corrosion, water, chafing and pushed out terminals
  6. Clean, repair and seal the connection, or replace the switch if it fails the bench check
  7. Clear the code, cycle the door several times and verify the status tracks the door correctly every time
