Fuel Fill Door Lock Control Circuit Low

Jump to the fix

Severity

Low

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable; have it fixed at the first opportunity.

First step

Confirm the fault is current, then unplug the actuator and clear the code to see whether the fault changes character

What does it mean?

P04BD indicates that the control circuit for the fuel filler door lock actuator is being held below the module's low voltage threshold. The module monitors its own output while driving the actuator; a reading near ground when the output should be at supply level means the line is grounded somewhere it should not be. The usual causes are a wire that has rubbed through to the body, a wet connector that bridges the pins, or an actuator whose winding has shorted internally. The module protects its driver stage by disabling the output, so the filler door stops locking altogether rather than working weakly. Because the actuator lives in an area that is regularly exposed to water and road salt, corrosion is a very common contributor.

Symptoms

  • Fuel filler door does not lock with the vehicle at all
  • MIL (check engine lamp) on with fuel filler door lock circuit codes
  • No actuator sound during an output test
  • Occasional blown fuse on the circuit that feeds the lock actuator
  • Security concern because the filler door remains accessible
  • Fault often noticed after a period of wet weather or winter driving

Likely causes

  • Control wire chafed to the body panel, a bracket or a rear wheel arch liner, shorting to ground
  • Water and salt inside the actuator connector bridging the control pin to ground
  • Internally shorted actuator winding measuring far below its specified resistance
  • Harness pinched during rear bumper, tank or trim work
  • Insulation damage where the harness passes through the body grommet into the filler recess
  • Corrosion in an inline connector in the rear body harness
  • Module driver shorted internally, holding the output low

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the fault is current, then unplug the actuator and clear the code to see whether the fault changes character
  2. With the actuator disconnected and the key off, measure resistance from the control pin at the harness to ground; a very low value confirms a wiring short
  3. Measure the actuator winding resistance and compare with specification to identify an internal short
  4. Inspect the connector for water, corrosion, damaged seals and terminals that have been pushed together
  5. Trace the harness through the grommet and along the rear body, looking for chafe points and crushed sections
  6. Repair the shorted wire with proper insulation and sealing, and re secure the loom away from sharp edges
  7. Replace the actuator if it is internally shorted, then clear the code and confirm the lock cycles normally
