Vehicle Speed Signal Missing or Improper

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Note the freeze frame conditions and check for other shorted-to-battery codes that share the same loom

  • 0Powertrain (Other)
  • 39Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1039 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Oil Supply Solenoid Valve Driver Short To Battery .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on, usually stored as a hard fault that returns immediately
  • Cylinder 2 oil supply stays in one state, giving rough running and an unstable idle
  • Loss of power and hesitation when the engine tries to change its operating mode
  • Audible valve-train noise from the head
  • Limp mode with restricted engine speed on some vehicles
  • Occasional blown fuse on the circuit that shares the shorted supply

Likely causes

  • Control wire insulation rubbed through and touching a permanently live wire or a live terminal in the same loom
  • Moisture or corrosion inside a connector bridging the control pin to an adjacent battery-fed pin
  • Internal short in the solenoid where the winding contacts the supply side
  • Damaged or pinched harness at a bracket, clamp or heat shield near the cylinder head
  • Incorrect repair work — a mis-pinned connector or a spliced wire tapped into the wrong circuit
  • Failed ECM (engine control module) output stage holding the line high

How to fix it

  1. Note the freeze frame conditions and check for other shorted-to-battery codes that share the same loom
  2. Disconnect the solenoid, switch the ignition on and measure the control wire against ground; battery voltage with the solenoid unplugged proves the short is in the wiring, not the valve
  3. If the wire is clean, measure the solenoid itself for continuity between the winding and its supply terminal
  4. Follow the harness visually from the connector back toward the module, paying attention to clamps, heat shields and any point where the loom crosses a live cable
  5. Inspect connectors for water ingress and terminal-to-terminal tracking; dry and reseal any that show it
  6. Repair or replace the damaged harness section rather than patching over the chafe point, and re-route it away from the heat source
  7. Replace the solenoid if it is internally shorted, and test the module output only once the harness is confirmed good
