Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check the live value with the ignition on and a cold engine; a reading far from ambient points straight at an open or shorted circuit

  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Powertrain (Other)
  • 84Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1084 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Circuit . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with the oil temperature value missing or pinned at an extreme reading
  • Oil temperature gauge inoperative or stuck on vehicles that display it
  • Cooling fan or oil cooler control behaving incorrectly
  • Service interval or oil condition monitoring not updating
  • Slightly rough running or altered shift points where the value feeds other strategies
  • Often no drivability complaint at all beyond the warning light

Likely causes

  • Open circuit or short in the sensor signal or ground wire
  • Corroded, oil-contaminated or unlatched sensor connector
  • Failed sensor element that no longer changes resistance with temperature
  • Harness damage where the loom passes close to the exhaust or a moving component
  • Missing or high-resistance sensor ground at its attachment point
  • Wrong or non-matching replacement sensor fitted during earlier work
  • Module input circuit fault, only considered once everything upstream tests good

How to fix it

  1. Check the live value with the ignition on and a cold engine; a reading far from ambient points straight at an open or shorted circuit
  2. Unplug the sensor and measure its resistance, comparing it against the temperature/resistance specification
  3. With the connector unplugged and the ignition on, check for reference voltage on the signal wire and a good ground on the return wire
  4. Bridge the two connector pins briefly with the ignition on — if the displayed temperature swings to the opposite extreme, the wiring and module are working and the sensor is at fault
  5. Inspect the connector and the nearby harness for oil, corrosion, melted insulation and chafe marks
  6. Repair the wiring fault or fit the correct sensor for the engine
  7. Clear the code and verify the reading tracks coolant temperature sensibly through a full warm-up
