What does it mean?
P1086 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Tumble Generated Valve Position Sensor Circuit Low .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, often with a companion tumble valve code
- Rough, lumpy idle that is most obvious during the first minutes after a cold start
- Hesitation or a stumble when pulling away or accelerating gently
- Noticeably poorer fuel economy
- Slower warm-up and, on some vehicles, a stronger exhaust smell shortly after start
- Occasional misfire codes for individual cylinders
Likely causes
- Signal wire shorted to ground through a chafed section of the intake loom
- Corroded or water-filled connector at the tumble valve position sensor
- Open 5 V reference feed to the sensor, which drops the signal to zero
- Failed sensor with an internally shorted or worn resistive track
- Valve shaft jammed by carbon build-up so the sensor sits at the bottom of its travel
- Broken linkage or actuator arm leaving the sensor at rest against its stop
- Module input fault as the final possibility
How to fix it
- Watch the tumble valve position value in live data with the ignition on and compare it with the commanded position
- Unplug the sensor and check for 5 V reference and a good ground at the connector before condemning the sensor
- Backprobe the signal wire and move the valve linkage by hand — a healthy sensor sweeps smoothly without dropouts
- Inspect the connector and the harness along the intake manifold for chafing, moisture and corrosion
- Remove the intake ducting and check the flap shafts for carbon deposits binding the mechanism; clean carefully rather than forcing the linkage
- Check the actuator and linkage for broken plastic parts or a detached arm
- Repair the wiring, free or replace the valve assembly, and renew the position sensor if it fails the sweep test
