What does it mean?
P1170 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: HO2S-11 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) Circuit Stuck at Mid-Range .
Symptoms
- Check engine light on, often with fuel trim codes as well
- Engine stays in open loop, running noticeably rich
- Strong exhaust smell and black smoke under load
- Poor fuel economy and reduced power
- Rough idle and possible hesitation
- Catalytic converter can overheat if the fault is ignored
Likely causes
- Dead or lazy oxygen sensor whose element no longer generates a switching voltage
- Open circuit in the sensor signal or sensor ground wire, leaving only the module bias voltage
- Sensor element contaminated by oil, coolant or silicone so it cannot react
- Failed heater circuit keeping the element below the temperature it needs to switch
- Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor holding the reading artificially flat
- Corroded connector or high-resistance terminal in the sensor harness
- Rarely, a module input circuit that has lost its reference
How to fix it
- Graph the sensor voltage with a scan tool at operating temperature; a flat line near mid-range confirms the condition
- Unplug the sensor and check for the module bias voltage on the signal pin; no voltage points to wiring or the module
- Force a rich condition and then a lean condition and see whether the sensor moves at all
- Measure continuity of the signal and ground wires from sensor to module
- Test the heater element resistance and its supply
- Inspect the exhaust upstream of the sensor for leaks and check the sensor tip for oil, ash or white deposits
- Replace the oxygen sensor once wiring, heater and exhaust are proven good, then verify switching activity
