Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Follow the supply from the battery to the throttle motor.

  • 78Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1178 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Electronic Throttle System Motor Battery Voltage Open .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on with a reduced power warning as soon as the fault occurs
  • Throttle stays at its default position, so the engine only idles or barely responds
  • Severe loss of power, vehicle cannot be driven normally
  • Very high or very low idle, or immediate stalling
  • Sometimes several throttle codes set at once
  • Fault may come and go with vibration if a connection is loose

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse in the throttle actuator supply circuit
  • Faulty main or throttle relay, or a corroded relay socket
  • Open wire between the fuse box and the throttle body connector
  • Corroded or backed-out supply terminal in the throttle body connector
  • Loose, corroded battery terminal or a poor main power distribution connection
  • Failed internal supply path or relay driver inside the engine control module

How to fix it

  1. Check the fuses and relays that feed the throttle actuator and confirm the relay clicks and passes voltage
  2. With the ignition on, measure voltage at the throttle body connector supply pin against a good ground
  3. Perform a voltage drop test along the supply wire while the circuit is loaded to reveal high resistance
  4. Inspect the connector for corroded, burnt or recessed terminals and check pin tension
  5. Clean and tighten battery terminals and the main power distribution connections
  6. Repair the open wire or replace the failed relay, then clear the codes
  7. Run the throttle relearn procedure and confirm the throttle follows the pedal in live data
