What does it mean?
P1260 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Fuel Pump Speed Relay Control Circuit Malfunctions .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on and the engine hesitates or misfires under heavy load
- Extended cranking or an intermittent no start
- Fuel pump noise louder or completely absent when the ignition is switched on
- Stalling at idle or when pulling away, then restarting normally
- Loss of power at higher speeds while low load driving feels acceptable
- Lean condition codes stored alongside this fault
Likely causes
- Failed fuel pump speed relay with burnt or welded contacts
- Corroded, loose or overheated relay socket terminals
- Open circuit or high resistance in the relay control wire from the module
- Control wire shorted to ground or to battery voltage where the loom is chafed
- Blown fuse or open resistor in the fuel pump speed circuit
- Poor ground for the relay or the pump control module
- Failed pump control module or driver output after the wiring is proven
How to fix it
- Listen for the pump priming with the ignition on, then check fuel pressure with a gauge under load
- Locate the fuel pump speed relay, swap it with an identical relay from a non critical circuit and see whether the behaviour changes
- Inspect the relay socket for melted plastic, corroded blades and loose terminals
- Measure the coil supply and the control wire from the module at the socket while cranking
- Check the relevant fuses and any pump speed resistor for continuity
- Test the ground path with a voltage drop measurement under load rather than a simple continuity check
- Replace the relay, repair the socket or harness, or fit the proven faulty control module, then verify pump speed changes as commanded on live data
