What does it mean?
P1406 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: EGR Valve Pintle Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Rough idle, stalling at idle or when slowing to a stop
- Hesitation and poor throttle response
- Engine knock under load if EGR is disabled by the module
- Higher fuel consumption
- Emissions test failure
Likely causes
- Open or shorted pintle position sensor circuit
- Worn potentiometer track inside the EGR valve
- Carbon build-up preventing the pintle from moving through its full range
- Missing 5 volt reference or an open sensor ground
- Corroded EGR valve connector or a damaged pigtail
- Harness chafed or heat damaged near the exhaust
- Control module input circuit fault
How to fix it
- Read the pintle position in live data with the key on and while commanding the valve open
- Check for 5 volts on the reference wire and a clean ground at the connector
- Move the valve by hand where possible and confirm the position value sweeps smoothly with no dead spots
- Inspect the connector and pigtail for heat damage, corrosion and melted insulation
- Check harness continuity to the control module and look for chafe points
- Clean carbon from the valve and the intake passages
- Replace the EGR valve or its position sensor when the signal is erratic or dead, then verify operation in live data
