What does it mean?
P1409 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Tank Ventilation Valve Circuit Malfunction Conditions .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Unstable idle and occasional stalling, especially right after refuelling
- Fuel smell around the vehicle
- Difficulty starting immediately after filling the tank
- Slightly higher fuel consumption
- Emissions test failure
Likely causes
- Open circuit or short in the purge valve control wiring
- Failed purge valve solenoid winding
- Corroded or water damaged connector at the valve
- Missing supply voltage: blown fuse or a faulty relay
- Purge valve stuck open or closed by charcoal debris from the canister
- Damaged control module output driver
- Harness chafing along the intake manifold
How to fix it
- Command the purge valve on and off with a scan tool and listen for a clear click
- Measure the valve winding resistance and compare it with specification
- Check for battery voltage on the supply pin and a switching ground from the module
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, water and spread terminals
- Apply low pressure to the valve and confirm it seals fully when de-energised
- Inspect the harness along the intake manifold for chafing and heat damage
- Replace the purge valve or repair the wiring, then run the evaporative system monitor to confirm the repair
