What does it mean?
P1489 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit High .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Purge valve never opens, so the charcoal canister is never emptied
- Fuel vapour smell, most noticeable shortly after refuelling
- Extended cranking or hard starting after filling the tank
- Higher hydrocarbon readings at an emissions test, because stored vapour is never drawn into the engine
- EVAP monitor does not complete
Likely causes
- Purge valve control wire shorted to battery voltage
- Open in the control circuit, which lets the module driver read high
- Purge solenoid with an internally open winding
- Corroded or backed-out terminals at the purge valve connector
- Harness chafed against a bracket or the intake manifold
- Poor ground for the purge control circuit
- Module output driver fault
How to fix it
- Command the purge valve on and off with a scan tool and listen for it to click
- Unplug the valve and check the control wire for voltage with the key on
- Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare it with specification
- Inspect the connector and harness near the intake for chafing and heat damage
- Verify the feed side of the valve has correct ignition voltage
- Repair the wiring or replace the purge solenoid
- Clear the code and run the EVAP monitor to confirm the repair
