Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Prove both the electrical and the vacuum side:

What does it mean?

P1523 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Variable Inertia Charging System Solenoid Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on while the engine still idles smoothly
  • Loss of torque in one part of the rev range, so the engine feels flat and then suddenly wakes up
  • Sluggish acceleration under load
  • No audible click from the solenoid when it should switch
  • Slightly higher fuel consumption
  • Intake note remains constant where it should change

Likely causes

  • Open or shorted solenoid winding
  • Corroded or loose connector at the solenoid
  • Chafed or broken control wire between the module and the solenoid
  • Cracked, split or disconnected vacuum hoses, or a leaking vacuum reservoir or check valve
  • Seized intake flap or a broken linkage, which loads the actuator abnormally
  • Blown fuse or poor supply to the solenoid
  • Module output driver failure

How to fix it

  1. Command the solenoid with a scan tool and listen for it clicking while watching the flap move
  2. Inspect the vacuum hoses, reservoir and check valve for cracks and leaks with a hand vacuum pump
  3. Measure the solenoid winding resistance and check for supply and ground at the connector
  4. Check the control wire for continuity, short to ground and short to positive
  5. Free or replace a seized flap or broken linkage inside the manifold
  6. Replace the solenoid if it is electrically or pneumatically faulty
  7. Repeat the actuation test afterwards and verify the flap holds both positions
