What does it mean?
P1636 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Throttle Valve Position Control, Range Check (Bank 1) .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on with a reduced power warning
- Idle too high, too low or hunting up and down
- Poor throttle response with a flat spot on acceleration
- Engine stalling when lifting off the throttle or coming to a stop
- Limp mode limiting engine speed
- Cruise control unavailable
Likely causes
- Carbon deposits in the throttle bore restricting plate travel, especially around the closed position
- Throttle position sensor track worn, so the reported angle no longer matches reality
- Throttle adaptation never carried out after cleaning, replacement or a battery disconnection
- Throttle motor weak, binding or drawing excessive current
- Vacuum leak after the throttle plate, so the module commands an unusual angle to hold idle
- Corroded or wet throttle connector, high resistance on the signal, reference or ground wires
- Bent throttle plate or a damaged return spring after intake work
How to fix it
- Compare the commanded and actual throttle angle in live data at idle and through a slow sweep
- Check the learned closed throttle position value against specification
- With the ignition off, remove the intake duct and inspect the bore and plate for carbon, then check that the plate moves freely and snaps closed
- Clean the throttle body carefully without forcing the plate, then run the throttle adaptation procedure
- Measure the sensor tracks and the throttle motor winding resistance if the fault remains
- Test the 5 V reference, ground and both signal wires at the throttle connector, and smoke test for unmetered air leaks after the throttle
- Replace the throttle body and complete the adaptation only after the wiring and leak checks are clear
