What does it mean?
P1641 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Generator Battery Terminal Open Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on, usually together with the battery or charge warning lamp
- System voltage stays near 12 V with the engine running instead of rising to charging voltage
- Dim or flickering headlights, slow blower, weak horn as the battery drains
- Battery goes flat overnight or after a short trip; slow cranking or no start
- Burning smell or heat discoloration around the alternator output stud
Likely causes
- Loose, corroded or burnt nut on the alternator B+ output stud
- Open, chafed or heat-damaged heavy charging cable between alternator and battery or fuse box
- Blown main charging fuse or fusible link in the alternator output path
- Corroded battery posts and clamps, or a failed main engine-to-body ground strap
- Failed internal regulator or rectifier so the alternator produces no output on B+
- Damaged voltage sense wire that the module uses to monitor the charging line
- Poor connection where the charging cable lands in the underhood fuse box
How to fix it
- Compare charging voltage on scan tool live data with a multimeter reading at the battery, engine running
- Inspect the alternator B+ stud: check nut tightness and look for corrosion, a melted eyelet or heat damage
- Voltage-drop test the charging cable from alternator output to battery positive, and the ground path; more than a few tenths of a volt means excessive resistance
- Check the main charging fuse or fusible link and the fuse box terminal it sits in
- Test the battery and clean and refit the posts and the engine-to-body ground strap
- Replace the alternator only if output is missing with the cabling proven good
- Clear the code and recheck charging voltage under electrical load (headlights, blower, rear defogger on)
