What does it mean?
P1647 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Checking coding/versions of control modules in CAN-bus .
Symptoms
- MIL on, often with warning lamps from several other systems
- Features stop working although the mechanical parts are fine: cruise control, stop-start, comfort functions
- Scan tool reports a module as not coded, or shows a coding or version mismatch
- Communication codes stored in more than one module at the same time
- The code returns immediately after clearing, sometimes with no drivability complaint at all
Likely causes
- A control module replaced or reflashed but never coded and adapted to this vehicle
- Software version mismatch between modules after a partial update
- Wrong variant coding entered during a retrofit or option installation
- A module added to or removed from the vehicle without updating the installation list
- Programming session interrupted by low voltage, leaving an incomplete version record
- A used or donor module still carrying another vehicle's coding
- CAN wiring or termination fault that prevents a module from reporting its version
How to fix it
- Read the fault memory of every module and note which one reports the coding or version problem
- Find out whether any module was recently replaced, reflashed or retrofitted
- Compare the vehicle's equipment and installation list with the modules actually fitted
- Connect a battery support unit so voltage stays stable, then code and adapt the flagged module with a capable tool
- Bring the affected modules to matching software versions where the manufacturer requires it
- If a module cannot be reached at all, check its power, ground, CAN wiring and bus termination before coding
- Clear all fault memories after coding and re-scan the complete vehicle to confirm
