Metering Oil Pump Stepping Motor Circuit Malfunction

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Confirm the actual lamp behaviour first: does it stay on with the engine running while no other codes are stored

  • 6Powertrain (Other)
  • 92Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1692 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Malfunction Indication Light Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • The warning lamp stays lit all the time and never goes out after starting
  • On some circuits the lamp glows faintly even with the ignition switched off
  • Other cluster warning lamps may behave oddly at the same time
  • The engine itself runs normally, with no driveability complaint
  • Emissions inspection failure because the lamp will not respond correctly during the bulb check

Likely causes

  • Malfunction indicator lamp control wire chafed against the body or a bracket and grounded
  • Water intrusion into the instrument cluster connector or a harness connector behind the dash
  • Failed lamp driver inside the control module, latched to ground
  • Incorrect bulb or LED fitted in the cluster, changing the circuit load and behaviour
  • Wiring damage left behind after dash, audio or alarm installation work
  • Corroded cluster connector pins bridging the lamp circuit to a ground pin

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the actual lamp behaviour first: does it stay on with the engine running while no other codes are stored
  2. Unplug the instrument cluster and check whether the circuit is still grounded; this separates cluster faults from harness faults
  3. Trace the lamp control wire between the module and the cluster, looking for chafing at pass-throughs and brackets
  4. Check for recent electrical accessory work behind the dash that could have pierced the circuit
  5. Measure the circuit resistance to ground with the module disconnected; a near-zero reading confirms the short
  6. Repair the shorted wire and route it clear of sharp edges
  7. Replace the cluster or the module only once the short is proven to be internal
