What does it mean?
P1696 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: TCFC Data Line Signal Low Input .
Symptoms
- MIL on with transmission or general driveability warnings
- Transmission holding one gear or shifting harshly
- The affected value in live data stuck at zero or at its minimum reading
- Related communication codes stored in more than one module
- Intermittent faults that come and go with road vibration or temperature
- Limp mode appearing after a period of driving
Likely causes
- Signal line shorted to ground, or pulled low by a failed pull-up circuit
- Open circuit or high resistance on the signal wire, letting the input drift to its low limit
- Corroded, wet or bent terminals at either connector on the link
- Sending module unable to drive the line to its normal level because it has failed
- Poor shared ground between the two modules, offsetting the whole signal level
- Chafed harness where the loom passes a bracket, bulkhead or moving part
- Low supply voltage reaching the sending module
How to fix it
- Read live data and confirm the value is genuinely pinned at the bottom of its range
- Disconnect the module and measure the signal circuit resistance to ground; a low reading confirms a short
- Check continuity of the signal wire end to end and voltage drop on both module grounds
- Inspect the connectors for corrosion, moisture and pushed-back terminals, then clean and reseat
- Perform a wiggle test on the harness with the data displayed to catch an intermittent fault
- Repair the shorted or broken wire with a sealed joint and secure it away from chafe points
- Replace the sending module only after the wiring, grounds and supply voltage are proven good
