What does it mean?
P1729 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: 4 x 4 Low Switch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on after using or attempting low range
- The 4L indicator does not light, or flashes and never becomes steady
- Transmission keeps its normal shift schedule in low range, so shifts feel harsh and early
- Transfer case grinds or refuses to complete the shift into low
- Speed related functions behave oddly while in low range
Likely causes
- Failed 4x4 low range switch with worn or burnt internal contacts
- Water, mud and salt corrosion in the underbody switch connector
- Chafed, stretched or broken wire where the harness runs along the transfer case
- Transfer case not fully shifting into low range, so the switch never closes
- Worn transfer case shift fork, rail or a sticking shift motor stopping short of the detent
- Short to ground or short to battery on the switch signal circuit
- Module input fault, considered last after all circuit tests pass
How to fix it
- Watch the low range switch state on live data while shifting the transfer case in and out of low
- Inspect the switch, its connector and the underbody harness for corrosion and impact damage
- Measure continuity across the switch in both positions with the connector removed
- Backprobe the signal wire at the module and check it for an open, short to ground or short to battery
- Verify the transfer case actually completes the shift, checking linkage or shift motor position feedback
- Repair or reroute damaged harness sections and seal the connector before reassembly
- Replace the switch, then confirm the 4L indicator and shift schedule respond correctly
