What does it mean?
P1783 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Circuit High Input .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) is on and the fluid temperature reads implausibly cold, often the lowest value the scan tool can show
- Torque converter lockup never engages because the module believes the fluid is still cold
- Cold-shift strategy stays active: late, harsh shifts even after a long drive
- Higher engine speed at cruise and increased fuel consumption
- The transmission may enter limp mode
- No overheat protection, so the fluid can be damaged without warning
Likely causes
- Open circuit in the temperature sensor signal or ground wire
- Sensor thermistor failed open internally
- Broken internal transmission harness, a common failure where it flexes near the valve body
- Corroded or fluid-contaminated pins at the transmission case connector
- Signal wire shorted to a voltage source, pushing the reading to the high limit
- High-resistance terminal that has been overheated in a previous repair
- Module input circuit fault
How to fix it
- Compare the fluid temperature reading with ambient temperature after the vehicle has stood overnight; a value far below ambient proves the fault
- At the case connector, jumper the sensor signal to ground and see whether the reading swings to the hot end; if it does, the wiring to the module is good
- Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the temperature and resistance table
- Check continuity of the signal and ground wires between the case connector and the module
- Inspect the case connector for fluid wicking, corrosion and spread terminals
- Replace the sensor or the internal harness assembly, refill to the correct level and verify the temperature now tracks properly during warm-up
