What does it mean?
P1786 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T FAS Signal Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) is on, usually with additional transmission or engine codes
- Harsh shifts, because the coordination between engine and transmission is lost
- Transmission enters limp mode and holds one gear
- Shift timing feels inconsistent and unrelated to driving conditions
- Reduced power or hesitation under acceleration
- The fault may be intermittent and set only after the vehicle warms up
Likely causes
- Open or broken conductor in the signal wire between the two control units
- Signal wire shorted to ground or to a voltage source where the loom has chafed
- Corroded, wet or backed-out terminals at either control unit connector
- Poor ground or low supply voltage shifting signal levels outside the accepted window
- Faults on the sending unit's side that make it transmit an incorrect value
- Damage from a previous harness repair or an accessory spliced into the line
- Failed input or output stage in one of the two control units
How to fix it
- Read the codes in both control units and note which faults appeared first
- Back-probe the signal line at the receiving unit and watch it with a scope or meter while the vehicle is operated
- With both connectors disconnected, check the wire for continuity and for shorts to ground and to battery
- Inspect both connectors for moisture, corrosion and terminal tension, and wiggle-test the loom along its route
- Verify supply voltage and perform ground voltage drop tests on both units
- Repair the wiring first; consider reprogramming or replacing a control unit only when the circuit is proven good
