Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Decide first whether the pressure is genuinely missing or only reported wrong.

  • 51Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1851 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Accumulator Pressure Sensor Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Gearbox warning lamp on, often with the check engine lamp as well
  • Hydraulic pump running constantly or cycling far more often than normal
  • The gearbox refuses to select a gear, or drops into neutral while driving
  • Clutch not disengaging properly, causing a shudder or a stall at a stop
  • Vehicle immobile in the worst case

Likely causes

  • Sensor internally failed, drifting or stuck at a fixed value
  • Water or oil in the sensor connector corroding the pins
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wire between the sensor and the control unit
  • Genuine loss of accumulator pressure from a leaking accumulator, seal or hydraulic line
  • Hydraulic pump or its relay failing so pressure never builds to the expected level
  • Low fluid level in the hydraulic reservoir
  • Control unit reference or supply circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Read all gearbox codes and note whether pump or clutch codes are stored alongside
  2. Watch the accumulator pressure value live while the pump runs and after it stops, and see whether pressure holds
  3. Check the hydraulic fluid level and look for external leaks around the accumulator, lines and actuator
  4. Inspect the sensor connector for water, oil and corrosion, and check the loom for chafe
  5. Measure the sensor supply, ground and signal at the connector with the key on
  6. Test the pump circuit, its relay and fuse if pressure genuinely fails to build
  7. Replace the sensor once the hydraulics are proven, then run the required learn procedures
