What does it mean?
P1855 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Clutch Stroke Sensor Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Gearbox warning lamp on, often with a clutch or transmission message
- Jerky, snatchy take-up when pulling away
- Clutch slipping under load with engine speed rising without acceleration
- Gears difficult to engage, or the gearbox refusing to select a gear
- Engine stalling as the vehicle comes to a stop
Likely causes
- Sensor internally worn or failed, producing a noisy, stepped or fixed output
- Water or oil ingress in the actuator connector corroding the terminals
- Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring between the sensor and the control unit
- Clutch worn past the range the stored adaptation values cover
- Clutch or actuator work carried out without running the required learn procedure
- Hydraulic actuator leaking or losing pressure so the stroke never matches the command
- Release bearing, fork or actuator rod binding and restricting travel
How to fix it
- Read all gearbox codes and check for related actuator or pressure faults
- Compare the commanded clutch position with the actual stroke value on the scan tool during engagement
- Read the clutch wear and adaptation values, since a clutch at the end of its range sets this fault on its own
- Inspect the actuator connector and loom for water, oil, corrosion and chafe
- Measure the sensor supply, ground and signal, and check the wiring for opens and shorts
- Run the clutch and stroke learn procedures, then retest the engagement trace
- Renew the clutch or the actuator unit where wear or leakage is confirmed, and always relearn afterwards
