What does it mean?
P1878 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Clutch Solenoid Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Malfunction indicator lamp on, frequently with additional gear ratio codes
- Harsh, slipping or delayed shifts involving the affected clutch
- Long delay before the vehicle moves when Drive or Reverse is selected
- Default (limp) operation locked in a single gear
- Shudder or vibration under light throttle if converter clutch control is affected
- Rising fuel consumption and a hot-running transmission
Likely causes
- Open circuit or short in the clutch solenoid control or feed wire
- Solenoid coil failed open or shorted internally
- Corroded or fluid-contaminated transmission case connector
- Internal harness chafed against the valve body or case wall
- Varnish or debris holding the solenoid valve so current draw is abnormal
- Low or degraded fluid causing erratic solenoid response
- Failed solenoid driver in the TCM/PCM
How to fix it
- Check fluid level and condition first; top up or service if it is low, dark or burnt
- Save freeze frame data and note whether the fault repeats under the same conditions
- Measure solenoid resistance at the transmission case connector and compare to specification
- Command the solenoid with a bidirectional scan tool and confirm it responds
- Test the control circuit for open, short to ground and short to voltage with the solenoid disconnected
- Drop the pan and inspect the filter and magnet for debris that could jam the solenoid
- Replace the solenoid or the solenoid pack, then relearn adaptives and confirm with a road test
