What does it mean?
U1040 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Electronic Brake Control Module .
Symptoms
- ABS, stability control and brake warning lamps coming on while driving, sometimes clearing after a restart
- Speedometer dropping out momentarily during the fault
- ABS and traction control unavailable while the lamps are on
- Cruise control cancelling by itself
- Harsh gear changes on vehicles that use brake data for shift decisions
- Fault triggered by rough roads, wet weather or a cold start
Likely causes
- Corroded or loose electronic brake control module connector, often affected by road spray
- Intermittent open or high resistance in the bus wiring near the wheel arch or bulkhead
- Failing ground connection at the brake module mounting stud
- Fuse or relay supplying the brake module failing intermittently
- Weak battery or a charging fault causing the module to reset while driving
- Internal brake module fault that only shows up when hot or under vibration
- Harness damage caused by suspension movement or by a previous repair
How to fix it
- Read codes in every module and use freeze frame data to establish when communication was lost
- Test the battery and charging system, since a voltage dip is a common reason for a lost communication code
- Inspect and reseat the brake module connector, checking pin tension, corrosion and seal condition
- Clean and retighten the brake module ground stud, then do a voltage drop test on the ground circuit
- Wiggle test the harness along the wheel arch and bulkhead while monitoring live data for dropouts
- Check the bus lines for continuity and for intermittent shorts to ground or battery voltage
- Verify the fuse and relay feeding the module under load, not just visually
- Replace the electronic brake control module last, after wiring, grounds and supply have been proven
