SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Primary Id

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Compare the right and left headlamp modules with the scan tool; if the left one communicates, the fault is local to the right side

  • 1Network / Communication
  • 03Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1103 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Right Headlamp Leveling Control Module .

Symptoms

  • Headlamp levelling warning lamp or a lighting system message on the display
  • Right headlamp beam stuck too high, dazzling oncoming drivers, or aimed too low
  • Right headlamp levelling does not respond to the manual adjustment control
  • Automatic levelling stops working on load changes, so the beam does not correct when the vehicle is loaded
  • Adaptive or cornering functions of the right headlamp inoperative
  • Scan tool cannot communicate with the right headlamp module while the left one responds

Likely causes

  • Corroded or water damaged connector at the right headlamp levelling module, which sits in an exposed position at the front of the vehicle
  • Blown fuse or a broken supply wire feeding the levelling module
  • Open circuit or short in the bus wiring running to the right front corner of the car
  • Poor ground at the headlamp assembly mounting point
  • Internal failure of the levelling module or its actuator motor
  • Harness damage from front end accident repair, stone strike or a rodent
  • Vibration damage at the connector, common on headlamp units that have been removed several times

How to fix it

  1. Compare the right and left headlamp modules with the scan tool; if the left one communicates, the fault is local to the right side
  2. Check the fuse and supply circuit for the right headlamp levelling module and test them under load
  3. Inspect the headlamp connector for water, corrosion and damaged seals, and dry it thoroughly
  4. Measure supply voltage and ground at the module with the ignition on, using voltage drop tests
  5. Follow the harness from the right front corner back towards the gateway, checking for accident repair damage, chafing and rodent bites
  6. Test the bus lines for continuity and for shorts to ground and to battery voltage
  7. Command the levelling actuator with the scan tool once communication is restored and confirm the beam moves
  8. Replace the levelling module or the headlamp assembly only after supply, ground and network wiring have been verified, then carry out beam aiming
