Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Treat the restraint circuit with care: battery off and the specified waiting time observed before any connector is separated.

  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 2Network / Communication
  • 14Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1214 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Right Door Track Impact Acceleration Sensor .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp stays on from the moment the ignition is switched on
  • Right side airbag and curtain will not deploy in an impact
  • Restraint system warning message displayed
  • Fault sets again as soon as the codes are cleared
  • Belt pretensioner function may also be disabled
  • Airbag lamp causes an inspection failure

Likely causes

  • Sensor connector at the right sill or B-pillar not fully latched, corroded or full of moisture
  • Damaged wiring under the right sill trim, typically after seat, carpet or trim removal
  • Right side impact sensor failed internally
  • Water reaching the sensor from a blocked sunroof or door drain, or a leaking door membrane
  • Open or shorted sensor circuit back to the restraint control module
  • Unrepaired damage from a previous impact on that side of the vehicle
  • Restraint control module internal fault or poor power and ground supply

How to fix it

  1. Read the restraint module and check whether the code is current, and look for a stored deployment record
  2. Lift the right sill trim and examine the sensor, its mounting and its connector
  3. Reseat the connector and check the terminals for corrosion, spreading and push-back
  4. Measure the sensor circuit for continuity and for a short to ground back at the module connector
  5. Dry out and repair any water leak into the footwell before repairing the wiring
  6. Retorque the sensor to the body specification
  7. Fit a new impact sensor if the circuit is proven good; consider the restraint module only afterwards
