What does it mean?
U3001 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Improper Shutdown . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- The code appears right after a battery change, a jump start or bodywork
- Learned values are lost — idle adaptation, one-touch windows, seat memory, radio presets
- Warning lamps on at the first start of the day
- Displays start up slowly or hesitantly
- Random module resets while driving
- The code returns after every shutdown while the fault is still present
Likely causes
- Module losing power before shutdown completes, usually because of a loose or corroded battery terminal
- Weak or failing battery that collapses under load
- Corroded fuse box contacts or a poor ground on the module power circuit
- Battery disconnected while the ignition was still on, or before the modules had gone to sleep
- Faulty ignition switch or a body module cutting the supply too early
- Internal module fault preventing it from writing its data at shutdown
- Programming session interrupted, leaving the module in a bad state
How to fix it
- Load-test the battery and inspect the terminals for corrosion and tightness
- Check charging voltage and look for excessive alternator ripple
- Measure the module power feed for voltage drop under load
- Confirm the correct procedure was used at the last battery disconnection, and register a new battery where required
- Check for a parasitic drain that flattens the battery overnight
- Inspect the fuse box contacts and the ground points for corrosion
- Clear the code, run a full key-off and key-on cycle and see whether it returns before replacing anything
