Control Module Ground A

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Ground faults are found by measurement, not by looks; a clean-looking bolt can still be resistive.

What does it mean?

U3008 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Ground "A" . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • The system that module controls behaves erratically rather than failing outright
  • Several warning lamps on together
  • Functions get worse as electrical load increases — headlights, blower, heated screen
  • Scan tool link drops out intermittently
  • Odd interactions, such as lights flickering when another circuit is switched on
  • The code keeps returning after being cleared

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded ground bolt at the body, a very common problem after bodywork or where rust has formed
  • Broken or frayed ground wire between the module and the body
  • Paint, underseal or rust trapped under the ground eyelet, adding resistance
  • Corroded terminal on the ground pin at the module connector
  • Water ingress causing corrosion inside a ground splice
  • Extra accessories piggybacked onto the same ground point, overloading it
  • Internal fault in the module's own ground path

How to fix it

  1. Locate the module's "A" ground point from the wiring information
  2. Do a voltage drop test from the module ground pin to the battery negative with the system loaded; more than a few tenths of a volt is too much
  3. Remove the ground bolt, clean the eyelet and the body surface down to bare metal, refit and protect it
  4. Check the ground wire for corrosion under the insulation, especially near the eyelet
  5. Inspect the ground pin in the module connector for corrosion and push-back
  6. Move any added accessory grounds to their own dedicated point
  7. Repeat the voltage drop test after the repair before even considering the module
