Control Module Ground B

Jump to the fix

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Test the second ground exactly as you would the first; a shared ground stud can be good for one circuit and poor for another.

What does it mean?

U3009 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Control Module Ground "B" . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • Functions handled through the module's power side fail while logic functions still work
  • Several warning lamps on together, often with no clear pattern
  • Symptoms worsen with high electrical load or when the engine is running
  • Motors or actuators driven by the module run slowly or not at all
  • Scan tool communication is unstable
  • The code returns shortly after clearing

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose "B" ground bolt at the body or on the engine
  • Broken ground wire, or an eyelet that has corroded through at the crimp
  • Paint, rust or sealer trapped between the eyelet and the body surface
  • Ground pin at the module connector corroded or backed out of its housing
  • Water in a ground splice, particularly in a footwell or under-hood location
  • Aftermarket accessories added to the same ground stud, raising its resistance
  • Internal fault in the module's power ground path

How to fix it

  1. Identify the module's "B" ground point from the wiring information
  2. Measure voltage drop from the module ground pin to the battery negative with the circuit under load
  3. Undo the ground connection, clean both the eyelet and the mounting surface to bare metal, then refit and torque it
  4. Check the ground wire and crimp for corrosion hidden under the insulation
  5. Inspect the connector ground pin for corrosion, spreading and push-back
  6. Separate any aftermarket grounds that have been added to the same stud
  7. Confirm the voltage drop is within limits after repair before replacing the module
