What does it mean?
B1220 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Short in the Recirculation Control Motor Circuit .
Symptoms
- Air comes from one source only, either always fresh air or always recirculated cabin air
- The recirculation button on the climate panel does nothing or its indicator flashes
- Windows fog up more easily because fresh air cannot be selected
- Stale or musty smelling airflow in city traffic when recirculation should engage
- Faint clicking or buzzing behind the dashboard when the climate system is switched on
- Cabin heats or cools more slowly than normal
Likely causes
- Chafed or pinched wiring in the HVAC harness behind the dash shorting the recirculation motor control wire to ground or to battery voltage
- Internally shorted actuator motor windings, often after the motor stalled against a jammed door
- Moisture or condensate entering the actuator connector and bridging the terminals
- Recirculation flap binding on debris or a broken linkage arm, forcing the motor to draw excessive current
- Damaged connector at the climate control module with spread or pushed-back terminals
- Failed output driver stage inside the climate control module
How to fix it
- Read the stored body codes and check the freeze frame data to see whether the fault is permanent or intermittent
- Inspect the recirculation actuator connector on the HVAC housing for moisture, corrosion, and bent terminals
- Unplug the actuator and measure the motor winding resistance; a near-zero reading confirms an internal short
- With the actuator unplugged, check each control wire for continuity to ground and to battery positive to locate the shorted section
- Remove the actuator and turn the door by hand to confirm it travels freely from stop to stop
- Repair or reroute the damaged harness, then replace the actuator if the motor itself is shorted
- Clear the code, run the climate module actuator calibration if the vehicle supports it, and verify the door responds
