What does it mean?
B1266 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Short to B+ in Instrument Panel System Communication Bus Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Several instrument cluster warning lamps light at the same time
- Gauges drop out, read zero, or behave erratically
- The radio, climate panel, or other dash mounted controls stop responding
- The scan tool cannot communicate with one or more modules
- Symptoms come and go with vibration, temperature, or damp weather
Likely causes
- Communication bus wire chafed against a bracket behind the instrument panel and touching a 12 V feed
- Aftermarket accessory wiring such as an alarm, audio system, or dash camera spliced incorrectly onto the bus
- Internal failure of a module on the bus that is pulling the line to battery voltage
- Water intrusion behind the instrument panel bridging bus and power circuits
- Damaged connector with a pushed-in or bent terminal touching an adjacent power pin
- Harness damage after dash removal, airbag work, or accident repair
How to fix it
- Scan every module and note which ones are unreachable, since the pattern points to the affected bus segment
- Measure the bus voltage with the ignition on; a line sitting at battery voltage confirms the short
- Disconnect any aftermarket electrical accessories and retest immediately
- Unplug the modules on that segment one at a time until the bus voltage returns to normal, isolating the failed node
- Inspect the harness behind the instrument panel for chafe points, pinches, and water damage
- Repair the shorted wire with properly insulated splices, or replace the module that is loading the bus, then verify full communication with every module
