What does it mean?

B1376 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Tailgate Outer Handle Switch Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Pressing or pulling the outer handle no longer releases or opens the tailgate
  • If the switch is shorted the tailgate may open repeatedly or refuse to power close because it always sees an open request
  • The key fob and the inside button may still work normally
  • Operation gets worse in wet weather and improves as the vehicle dries out
  • A tailgate warning message or chime

Likely causes

  • Water inside the outer handle switch after a rear lamp, screen or handle seal has started to leak
  • Corroded connector at the handle, often with green or powdery terminals
  • Broken wire in the tailgate hinge boot harness after many thousands of open and close cycles
  • Switch stuck closed, so the module sees a permanent open request
  • Damage or a disturbed connector after tailgate lock, camera or trim work
  • Poor ground for the tailgate switch circuit
  • Input fault in the tailgate or body control module

How to fix it

  1. Operate the handle while watching the switch input on the scan tool to see whether the signal reaches the module at all
  2. Remove the tailgate trim panel and inspect the handle connector for water, corrosion and salt tracking
  3. Dry and clean the connector, then find and reseal the leak that let water in before refitting
  4. Flex the hinge boot harness while watching the input for dropouts
  5. Test the switch for continuity when operated and a clean open at rest; replace the handle assembly if it is internally corroded
  6. Repair any broken wire in the boot and sleeve it so it survives the flexing
  7. Treat the module as the last suspect, after wiring, switch and grounds are proven
