What does it mean?
B1492 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger’s (front) air bag module (2nd squib) system fault for ground circuit (short-circuited to ground) .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp on and restraint deployment staging disabled
- Hard code that will not clear while the short remains
- Lamp can appear or disappear when the dash flexes over rough roads
- Second stage inflator would not deploy in a crash
Likely causes
- Chafed insulation where the airbag harness passes a metal dash brace or bracket edge
- Wiring pinched during glovebox, dash panel or heater box reassembly
- Moisture and corrosion inside the airbag connector bridging a terminal to the shell
- Terminal pushed out of the connector and touching the body or the connector metal lock
- Internal short in the passenger airbag pigtail near the strain relief
- Aftermarket accessory wiring routed against the restraint harness and grounded
How to fix it
- Read the stored codes, then clear and recheck to confirm the short is live rather than stale memory
- Unplug the passenger airbag and test the harness side for continuity to ground with an approved tester
- Inspect the harness route behind the glovebox for chafe marks against brackets and sharp sheet metal edges
- Check the connector body for water, corrosion and a terminal that has backed out of position
- Repair the damaged section with proper crimped repair terminals and reroute it away from metal edges
- Replace the airbag pigtail or the airbag assembly only if the short is proven inside the component
- Clear the codes and confirm the circuit stays healthy through a wiggle test and a road test
