What does it mean?
B1497 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Application Specific Integrated Circuit (For Frontal Activation) .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp on permanently with all restraint functions disabled
- Code cannot be cleared and returns instantly
- Scan tool may struggle to communicate with the airbag control module
- Other unrelated internal fault codes stored in the same module
Likely causes
- Internal electronic failure of the airbag control module itself
- Voltage spike damage from an incorrect jump start, a boost charger, or welding carried out without disconnecting the battery
- Unstable or low supply voltage from a failing battery or charging system
- Corrosion or moisture at the module connector or under the module from a floor leak
- Loose module mounting or a poor ground path affecting internal references
- Module previously exposed to a deployment event and never replaced
- Electrical interference from poorly installed aftermarket equipment sharing the module supply
How to fix it
- Test the battery and charging system first; unstable voltage can trigger an internal module fault report
- Inspect the module connector and the carpet area around it for water, corrosion and salt residue
- Check the mounting bolts and the ground path, and retorque onto clean metal
- Clear the code once and see whether it returns immediately, which confirms a live internal fault
- Verify the module has not previously been through a deployment and locked itself
- Replace the airbag control module with the correct part number and complete the required configuration and coding
- Confirm the repair with a full system scan and a warning lamp self-test cycle
