Mirror Driver Switch Assembly Circuit Short To Battery

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

With the switch released, measure the signal wire at the module: it should sit at the module reference voltage, not at battery voltage

What does it mean?

B1541 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Occupant classification-ECU calibration malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Mirror drives in one direction only, or keeps running until it hits the end stop
  • Mirrors move without any input from the driver
  • Fuse feeding the door module blows repeatedly
  • Window and lock functions on the same switch pack behave unpredictably
  • The code sets again immediately after clearing, as soon as the ignition is switched on
  • Airbag warning lamp on with the passenger airbag status indicator wrong, where the code refers to occupant classification

Likely causes

  • Chafed insulation letting the mirror switch signal wire touch a live 12 V feed inside the door, typically the window motor or lock actuator supply
  • Water or road salt bridging the terminals inside the mirror switch assembly
  • Aftermarket wiring spliced into the door loom for speakers, alarm or mirror heaters back-feeding the switch circuit
  • Mirror switch shorted internally so the signal is held high in one or more positions
  • Damaged pull-up or input clamp inside the door module
  • Connector terminal pushed out of position and touching a powered pin
  • On applications where this code belongs to the occupant classification system, a missing or invalid zero-point calibration after seat or sensor work

How to fix it

  1. With the switch released, measure the signal wire at the module: it should sit at the module reference voltage, not at battery voltage
  2. Unplug the mirror switch and repeat the measurement to separate a faulty switch from a shorted harness
  3. Inspect the door loom where it crosses the window regulator and motor, the usual place for insulation to wear through
  4. Look for aftermarket splices and remove them before further testing, since these are a frequent cause of a short to battery
  5. Pull the door module fuse and check the signal circuit for continuity to any 12 V circuit
  6. Repair the damaged section properly and re-route it clear of moving parts; replace the switch only if it measures shorted internally
  7. Where the code refers to the occupant classification system, carry out the manufacturer zero-point calibration and confirm the seat parts are correctly matched
