Mirror Driver Switch Assembly Circuit Short To Ground

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Unplug the mirror switch and measure the resistance from the signal wire to ground: it should read open, and a near-zero reading confirms a short

What does it mean?

B1542 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Occupant Classification Sensor (S1) Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • Mirror behaves as if a switch is permanently pressed and drives to its end stop
  • Mirror motors buzz or stall with the ignition on
  • Module stays awake and the battery goes flat after a few days of parking
  • Mirror adjustment is completely dead in one or more directions
  • The code returns instantly after clearing, even without touching the switch
  • Airbag lamp on and passenger airbag status incorrect where the code refers to occupant classification

Likely causes

  • Mirror switch signal wire chafed against door sheet metal, a bracket or the window regulator, pulling the circuit to ground
  • Water in the door trim shorting the switch terminals to the door structure
  • Loom pinched or crushed inside the door hinge boot
  • Bent or displaced connector terminal touching the ground or shield pin
  • Mirror switch stuck or shorted internally so the input is held low all the time
  • Body or door module input stage pulled low internally
  • On applications where this code belongs to the occupant classification system, a failed occupant classification sensor or a short in its seat harness

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the mirror switch and measure the resistance from the signal wire to ground: it should read open, and a near-zero reading confirms a short
  2. Repeat the measurement at the module connector to decide whether the short is in the door or in the body section of the loom
  3. Inspect the loom inside the door, especially where it passes the regulator and the hinge boot, for insulation worn through to metal
  4. Check the connector for water, corrosion and a terminal pushed sideways onto the ground pin
  5. Test the switch alone: no position should show continuity to ground when the switch is released
  6. Repair and insulate the shorted section, re-routing it away from sharp edges; replace the switch only if it fails the bench test
  7. Where the code refers to occupant classification, inspect the seat harness under the seat and test the classification sensor against the specified values
