What does it mean?
B1543 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Occupant classification sensor (S2) malfunction .
Symptoms
- Power seat will not move in one or more directions, while other directions still work
- Seat moves only intermittently and stops when the switch is held
- Memory seat recall fails part way through or does not run at all
- Seat adjustment works when the switch is pressed hard or at an angle, pointing to worn contacts
- Airbag or passenger occupancy lamp behaviour changes where the code refers to occupant classification
Likely causes
- Worn contacts inside the power seat direction switch, a common result of daily use on the driver seat
- Drink spillage or cleaning fluid entering the seat switch and corroding its contacts
- Seat harness chafed or crushed under the seat rails as the seat travels through its full range
- Under-seat connector left unlatched or partly seated after seat removal or upholstery work
- Corroded terminals in the under-seat connector, common where carpets get wet
- Seat control module input failure, or lost module ground
- On applications where this code belongs to the occupant classification system, a failed classification sensor or its seat wiring
How to fix it
- Check the under-seat connectors first: unlatch, inspect and re-seat them, as a partly plugged connector is the most common cause here
- Watch the seat switch inputs in live data while operating each direction, and note which inputs never change state
- Test the switch for continuity in each direction at its own connector before condemning it
- Slide the seat fully forward and back while watching the input, to expose a harness that only fails at one end of the travel
- Inspect the loom where it runs along the seat rail for crushing, chafe or a stretched section
- Check the module supply and ground before replacing the seat module
- Where the code refers to occupant classification, follow the manufacturer test for the classification sensor and run the required calibration after repair
