What does it mean?
B1614 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Panel Illumination Control Circuit High .
Symptoms
- Rear wiper operates continuously regardless of the stalk position, or is completely dead
- Wiper motor gets hot or the linkage is strained by constant running
- Blade smears a dry screen because the wiper runs without wash fluid
- Rear wash cycle triggers without command
- On the illumination variant, dash lights stay at full brightness or ignore the dimmer entirely
Likely causes
- Mode select wire chafed against the column bracket or body metal, pulling the signal to ground
- Stalk switch stuck in a position or shorted internally to ground
- Corroded terminal bridging the signal to the ground pin in the column connector
- Water inside the connector behind the steering column
- Harness damage after steering column, airbag or clockspring work
- Module input pulled low internally
- On applications where this code refers to panel lighting, an illumination control circuit reading high from an open output or a short to voltage
How to fix it
- Disconnect the stalk switch and measure the mode select wire to ground with an ohmmeter; a very low reading with the switch removed points to the harness
- Inspect the loom where it passes the column bracket and any sharp edge, flexing it while measuring
- Check the connector behind the column for water and corroded pins
- Test the stalk switch on its own for continuity to ground in every position
- Repair the shorted section, insulate it and secure it away from metal
- Replace the stalk if it fails the bench test, and leave the module for last
- On the illumination variant, check the illumination circuit for an open and confirm the output level at the module
