Seat Driver Front Down Switch Circuit Failure

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Work carefully, because this is a live restraint circuit:

  • BBody
  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 7Body
  • 13Sequence number

What does it mean?

B1713 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Knee airbag – Driver resistance circuit short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp stays on continuously after the ignition is switched on
  • The driver knee airbag will not deploy in a collision, and other restraint functions may also be disabled
  • Airbag warning message displayed in the instrument cluster
  • The fault appeared after work under the dashboard or after the carpet had been wet
  • The vehicle fails a safety inspection because of the illuminated airbag lamp

Likely causes

  • Connector under the dashboard not fully latched, or the yellow connector locking mechanism damaged so the internal contacts are held incorrectly
  • Wiring to the knee airbag crushed or chafed under the dash, at the steering column or against a bracket
  • Water on the driver floor from a leaking seal, a blocked drain or a heater matrix, reaching the airbag connector
  • Harness damaged during work under the dashboard, such as audio, pedal or trim installation
  • Aftermarket pedals, floor mats or accessories trapping and cutting the wiring
  • Internal fault in the knee airbag inflator or its pigtail
  • Failed driver circuit inside the restraints control module

How to fix it

  1. Follow the safety procedure before touching anything: switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the specified stand down time before disconnecting any airbag connector
  2. Record the freeze frame data and check whether the fault is current or historic
  3. Inspect and reseat the knee airbag connector under the dashboard, checking the locking mechanism and the shorting contacts
  4. Examine the wiring for crushing, cuts and moisture, especially around the pedals and the steering column
  5. Check for water on the carpet and find the leak before repairing the circuit, otherwise the fault will return
  6. Test the circuit only with the manufacturer approved procedure and a specified load tool; never connect an ordinary ohmmeter directly to an airbag inflator
  7. Repair the wiring or replace the airbag unit as the procedure indicates, then clear the code and confirm the warning lamp completes its normal self test
