What does it mean?

B1869 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Lamp Air Bag Warning Indicator Circuit Open / Short to Body Ground .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp does not come on at all during the key on bulb check, or stays on permanently
  • The lamp flashes in a repeating pattern instead of behaving normally on some systems
  • No visual confirmation that the restraint system is healthy, so the vehicle cannot pass a safety inspection
  • Other cluster warning lamps may behave oddly if the fault is inside the cluster
  • Restraint functions may be inhibited until the indicator circuit is repaired

Likely causes

  • Burnt out air bag warning bulb or failed LED segment in the instrument cluster
  • Open circuit in the wire between the restraint control module and the cluster indicator driver
  • Backed out, spread or corroded terminal in the cluster or RCM connector
  • Indicator control wire chafed against a body panel and shorted to ground
  • Water damage behind the cluster after a windscreen or cowl leak
  • Instrument cluster indicator driver failure
  • Restraint control module output stage failure

How to fix it

  1. Follow air bag safety procedure first: switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the prescribed stand time before touching connectors
  2. Confirm whether the lamp is dead, permanently lit or flashing, as each points to a different half of the circuit
  3. Remove the cluster and check the bulb or LED and its socket for a burnt filament, corrosion or a cold solder joint
  4. Check continuity of the indicator wire between the RCM connector and the cluster, then check the same wire for a short to ground with both ends disconnected
  5. Inspect both connectors for pushed back pins, green corrosion and moisture, and reseat the locking tabs fully
  6. Command the indicator on and off with a scan tool bidirectional test to see whether the module or the lamp side is at fault
  7. Repair the wiring or replace the cluster, and only then consider the restraint control module
