What does it mean?

B1921 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Air Bag Diagnostic Monitor Ground Circuit Open .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on continuously, sometimes flashing rather than steady
  • Whole restraint system disabled, so no air bags or pretensioners would deploy
  • Several unrelated restraint codes stored at the same time, which is typical of a ground problem
  • Module may drop off the communication network intermittently
  • Fault can be triggered by driving over bumps if the ground connection is loose

Likely causes

  • Module ground bolt loose, corroded or fitted over paint after collision repair
  • Broken or corroded ground wire between the module and the body
  • Module connector not fully latched, or a ground terminal backed out of the housing
  • Corrosion caused by water reaching the module, which is usually mounted low on the tunnel or under a seat
  • Harness damaged during carpet, console or seat removal
  • Poor repair with a splice that has corroded internally
  • Restraint control module internal fault

How to fix it

  1. Observe air bag safety procedure before disconnecting the module or its connectors
  2. Read all codes and note whether several circuits report faults at once, which usually means a shared ground rather than several failures
  3. Locate the module ground point, remove the bolt and inspect for corrosion, paint, undersealant and a damaged eyelet
  4. Clean the contact area down to bare metal, refit with the correct fastener and torque it properly
  5. Perform a voltage drop test on the ground path with the system energised rather than relying on a simple continuity check
  6. Unlatch the module connector and inspect for backed out terminals, moisture and green corrosion, then reseat it fully until the lock engages
  7. Repair any previous splice with proper crimped and sealed terminals
