First step

  • 9Body
  • 32Sequence number

What does it mean?

B1932 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Driver-Side Air Bag Module (Inflator No.1) Circuit Resistance High .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on constantly and the driver air bag disabled
  • Horn and steering wheel switches may also stop working, which points to the clockspring
  • Fault often appears immediately after steering wheel, air bag or column repair
  • Warning may come and go as the steering wheel is turned
  • Restraint system message on the driver information display

Likely causes

  • Clockspring ribbon broken, the classic failure after the wheel has been turned to full lock with the clockspring uncentred or after column work
  • Air bag connector at the back of the steering wheel not fully seated, or its retaining clip not pushed home
  • Fretting corrosion and pin wear in the air bag or clockspring connector
  • Internal open in the driver air bag inflator (squib)
  • Broken conductor in the column loom where it flexes with the tilt mechanism
  • Terminal damaged by probing or by forcing the connector during a previous repair
  • Restraint control module connector or output fault

How to fix it

  1. Follow the air bag safety procedure: ignition off, battery disconnected, prescribed stand time completed
  2. Ask whether the fault started after steering or air bag work, since incorrect clockspring installation is a very common cause
  3. Check whether horn and wheel buttons still work, because losing several column circuits together points straight at the clockspring
  4. Disconnect the driver air bag, inspect the connector for a partly seated housing, an unlocked clip, pin fretting and corrosion, then reseat it firmly
  5. Fit the manufacturer approved test load in place of the air bag: if the code changes to a shorted or normal condition, the air bag module or the wiring upstream is identified
  6. Turn the wheel slowly lock to lock while monitoring to catch a clockspring that opens at a certain position
  7. Replace the driver air bag module if the open is inside it, and the restraint control module only as the last step
